END SENTENCING ENHANCEMENTS

Sentencing Enhancements are unfair and have disproportionately impacted black and brown communities of color.  A crime with three years can be enhanced to 30 years depending on the situation. This is an outdated law from the tough-on-crime era that has been shown to cause more harm in incarcerating community members with high profits for private prisons. We need to end Sentencing Enhancements here in Contra Costa County.

END MASS INCARCERATION

It is widely documented that institutions discriminate against Black and Brown people under the deceptive cloak of justice. There is too much evidence from how Black and Brown people are targeted and entrapped into webs of prejudiced decisions and environments that are set up to feed into mass incarceration instead of appropriate correction, rehabilitation, and re-entry with dignity.

CLOSING JUVENILE HALL

Today, research shows people who are locked up as teens are more likely to be locked up as adults. Minors should not be incarcerated for making mistakes where root causes stem from decades of social neglect and discrimination. We should be looking to develop an environment that rehabilitates and looks closer to home than a prison.

SCHOOL CLIMATE INITIATIVES

Schools should be a safe place to learn. West Contra Costa County Safe Return participates in a network of students, families, and school representatives to identify problems and solutions to rededicating school resources to students instead of resourcing police in schools.

JUSTICE REINVESTMENT CAMPAIGN

Ending Mass Incarceration requires work at every level. Part of that is correcting the gross abuse of profiting off people and the way resources are poured into a failing system. Justice reinvestment is a reform process that requires having those who have been impacted by the system to lead and develop best practices that rewire the way resources are distributed towards alternative practices.
